Pasquale Pistorio, ST President and CEO, Earns The 2004 IEEE Ernst Weber Engineering Leadership Recognition

KANSAS CITY, Mo., June 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- STMicroelectronics Inc. today announced that its parent company's President and Chief Executive Officer, Pasquale Pistorio, has received the 2004 IEEE Ernst Weber Engineering Leadership Recognition. The award recognizes Mr. Pistorio's leadership in revitalizing the semiconductor industry in Europe and increasing its influence worldwide. Presented at a ceremony in Kansas City, Mo., the award was accepted on behalf of Mr. Pistorio by Richard Pieranunzi, corporate vice president and CEO of STMicroelectronics Inc., the U.S. subsidiary of Geneva-based STMicroelectronics Group.

"An inspirational leader in the European semiconductor industry, Mr. Pistorio helped build what has become the world's sixth largest semiconductor company, STMicroelectronics," said Dov Jaron, IEEE Awards Board Chair. "His vision has made him a pioneer in establishing the semiconductor business as a global employer. Furthermore, throughout his tenure at ST, Mr. Pistorio has been a strong supporter of environmental protection and sustainable development and has done much to further the idea that environmentally responsible companies can be financially competitive in the global market."

Besides serving as ST's president and CEO, Mr. Pistorio sits on the Boards of MEDEA+, the Microelectronics for European Applications association, and is a member of the United Nations Information and Communications Task Force, which is dedicated to bridging the digital divide.

Mr. Pistorio launched his career in 1963 as a salesperson and, in 1967, joined Motorola, where he rose through the ranks to become director of international marketing in 1977 and eventually, Vice President and General Manager of the International Semiconductor Division, responsible for design, manufacturing and marketing activities for all regions outside of the United States. In 1980, he joined the SGS Group, an Italian microelectronics company, as President and Chief Executive Officer. There, he championed the merger of SGS with France's Thomson Semiconducteurs and later, the acquisition of Britain's InMos to form what is now STMicroelectronics. At ST, Mr. Pistorio has been responsible for developing ST's diverse product portfolio based on high-growth applications and relentless innovation, as well as its worldwide network of strategic alliances.

Past awards presented to Mr. Pistorio include Italy's Cavaliere del Lavoro, France's Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur, and the Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International's first Akira Inoue award for exceptional achievements in environment, health, and safety. He has received honorary degrees from the universities of Genova, Pavia, Catania, Palermo, Universita del Sannio and Malta. Mr. Pistorio was selected as a member of the "Conseil Strategique pour l'attractivite du pays aupres du Premier Ministre francais," a group of industry consultants to the French Prime Minister's office to create better conditions for inward investment and most recently he was appointed as a Vice-President of "Confindustria," the highly regarded Confederation of Italian Industrialists.

About the IEEE Ernst Weber Engineering Leadership Recognition

The IEEE Ernst Weber Engineering Leadership Recognition was established in 1985. It is presented for exceptional managerial leadership in the fields of interest to the IEEE. The leadership may be reflected in an executive role by attaining preeminent stature in the eyes of the engineering community as an individual whose inspirational, creative, and professional contributions have been extraordinarily successful, exemplary, and persuasive in pursuing the theory, planning implementation, and direction of outstanding achievements, contributions, or service in the field of electrotechnology. The award, which consists of a certificate and a crystal structure, takes its name from the IEEE's first president, whose outstanding professional contributions exemplify the true intent of the award. Recipient selection is administered by the Corporate Recognitions Committee through the IEEE Awards Board.
