BEIJING (AFX) - Two German companies, Lahmeyeb and Krebs und Kiefer, have been contracted to jointly design a ship-lift for China's Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River, the China Daily reported.
The ship-lift will raise vessels to the upstream side of the dam faster than the five-stage lock system currently in place.
The companies have agreed to submit designs for the ship-container part of the lift by the end of this year.
The Three Gorges Dam, the largest hydropower project in the world, was completed last Saturday.
The dam had been in construction since 1994.
