MADRID (Thomson Financial) - One of Spain's richest men, Rafael del Pino Moreno, who founded the infrastructure company Grupo Ferrovial SA, has died at the age of 87, his company announced Sunday.
Del Pino set up Ferrovial in 1952 and oversaw its metamorphosis into one of the world's leading infrastructure firms with operations in 43 countries spanning construction, airport, toll road and car park management and municipal services.
In 2006, Ferrovial acquired BAA -- a leading international airport operator which owns and operates seven airports in Britain including Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted -- and one in Naples in Italy for 23.6 billion euros.
Del Pino's personal fortune was estimated at $5 billion in 2005. In 2000, he stepped down and handed over the reins of the group to his son Rafael del Pino Calvo-Sotelo. tf.TFN-Europe_newsdesk@thomson.com afp/ak COPYRIGHT Copyright Thomson Financial News Limited 2008.
