On Thursday, December 10, 2009, Seattle will welcome the Japanese Mandarin and Pear Expo, an event to reintroduce the Northwest to the Japanese Mandarin "Aoshima" and the Japanese Tottori 20th Century Pear. The Japanese Mandarin and Pear Expo is being organized by Kyodo Public Relations, and will include business networking meetings, a special presentation and an exclusive fruit tasting session. The event, sponsored by MAFF (Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan), will be held at the Washington State Trade and Convention Center from 1 to 7 p.m.
The Expo will begin with an introduction from Japan's Honorable Consul General Mitsunori Namba of Seattle, followed by "Experience the Difference Quality Makes," a presentation by Chef Dean Shinagawa of Tulalip Resort Casino, who will discuss his experiences with the Japanese Mandarin "Aoshima" and Japanese Tottori 20th Century Pear along with his favorite recipes utilizing these traditional fruits. Attendees will then have the opportunity to participate in a presentation by some of Japan's most dedicated fruit growers who will highlight the growing region, the cultural significance and unrivaled quality of the Japanese Mandarin "Aoshima" and Japanese Tottori 20th Century Pear.
After the presentations, buyers will have the rare opportunity to engage in business networking meetings with the growers of these delicious, artisan fruits. These meetings will allow fruit buyers from the United States the opportunity to sit down with the growers of this region to gain knowledge on their farming practices and techniques that have made these fruits exceptional for centuries.
As part of the Japanese Mandarin and Pear Expo, guests will be also treated to an exclusive tasting of the Japanese Mandarin "Aoshima" and Japanese Tottori 20th Century Pear. Chef Dean Shinagawa and his culinary team will prepare a variety of samples, from freshly cut slices of the fruits and juices to original recipes and modern creations utilizing the traditional fruits.
The Original Japanese Mandarin "Aoshima" is a delicious fruit that is popular during the holiday season and is traditionally used in the United States and Canada as a stocking stuffer. It is easy to peel and extremely flavorful, and is commonly grown in Shizuoka, central Japan.
The Japanese Tottori 20th Century Pear is a fruit that is characterized by its light skin and crispy texture. It has a pleasant, subtle taste and provides a variety of health benefits. The Tottori 20th Century Pear is one of Japan's most popular cultivars, and is commonly grown in Tottori, western Japan.
