SAO PAULO, March 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- AT&T* announced today a contribution of US$20,000 to the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) to support a new course in Brazil called Digital Tools for Effective Public Service Journalism.
Beginning in April, the initiative will combine online and in-classroom training on how to use the latest digital tools to cover public-interest topics of concern to communities in Brazil, such as public transportation, economic development, and crime.
About 30 journalists will be selected to participate in the online portion of the program. They will be accepted based on the quality of their past reporting and their ability to immediately put to use the knowledge gained in the course. The 12 best participants will attend an additional in-person training in Sao Paulo.
"Thanks to AT&T, Brazilian journalists will now have the ability to tackle important subjects using the latest multimedia techniques," said ICFJ President Joyce Barnathan. "As a result, they will be able to break new ground in covering everything from sanitation to education to public health."

ICFJ's Knight International Journalism Fellow Bruno Garcez, a longtime BBC reporter and producer, will teach the course. Garcez is based at Abraji, a Sao Paulo-based journalism organization, where he is launching a network of citizen journalists who will produce multimedia stories for mainstream Brazilian media.
AT&T funded a similar course run by ICFJ for Spanish-speaking journalists at the Digital Journalism Center at the University of Guadalajara in Mexico.
