North Star Resource Group receives 2010 Community Leadership Award from InvestmentNews. Selected from hundreds of entries, The Volunteer Team Award was given to North Star Resource Group, led by chairman and chief executive Phil Richards. The team's financial advisors and staffers have donated nearly $1.2 million to its charitable arm, The Scott Richards North Star Charitable Foundation, since it began in 2004. Financial advisors who made exceptional charitable contributions to local communities were honored by 650 executives at the Fourth annual Community Leadership Awards in New York, City on Tuesday, September 14, 2010.
"This is an especially gratifying moment in my life," Mr. Richards said at Tuesday's gala dinner and ceremony. "Growing up in a tenement less than two miles south of here, at 11th and Avenue A, it is ironic that we are now being honored for something that started so close. The kids in the tenements were members of 'The Boys Club of New York' at 10th and Avenue A. A poster was displayed nearby that showed a tall man leaning over with an outstretched hand to a little girl that read, 'A man has never stood so tall as when he stooped to help a child.'
"That recollection changed my life, as similar events have altered the lives of many. When no one seemed to care, the Boys Club took us to Yankee, Dodger and Giants games, the Ringling Bros. Circus, the Rodeo, Bronx Zoo, and gave us free medical and dental care. Heck, I was on the Howdy Doody Show five times when TV first was seen in the forties. Things like that are infectious, and we all strive to continue to pass it on."
The North Star Charitable Foundation was renamed after Scott Richards, Phil's son and the former North Star President who died from myelofibrosis in 2008 at the age of 45. As a result of the InvestmentNews Award, the foundation will receive $15,000 on behalf of the Foundation which will be contributed to organizations working to combat Breast Cancer, Ataxia, Cystic Fibrosis, Myelofibrosis and Alzheimer's in addition to Bikes for Kids, a non profit public benefit foundation which helps boys and girls in challenging circumstances.
