The Women's Cancer Resource Center (WCRC) will welcome over 500 individuals to its 15th annual Swim a Mile for women with cancer fundraiser at Mills College, October 2-3, 2010.
"Since our inception, WCRC has sought to provide a broad spectrum of personalized services and resources to all women diagnosed with cancer," says Peggy McGuire, Executive Director of WCRC. "Our long history and experience with the current health care crisis has honed our services and created powerful community collaborations that improve the standards of care and decrease disparities."
Local DJ legend and author, Page Hodel, will spin music throughout the weekend and donate one-quarter of all profits from her book, Monday Hearts for Madalene, to WCRC. Read Hodel's personal story of how cancer touched her life at www.mondayheartsformadalene.com.
The Swim a Mile is a magical event that honors and memorializes friends, family and loved ones dealing with cancer. Many of the swimmers and "water-walkers" are survivors and swim to celebrate their own recovery.
The event includes art projects for children and adults, and healthy gourmet food for all who attend. WCRC is committed to producing a "green event," without plastic bottles or cutlery. All waste generated from the event will be composted or recycled.
WCRC has been providing free services for women with cancer since 1986. Special programs are offered to women who face barriers accessing care — including women without insurance or income, the elderly, African-Americans, Latinas, and LGBT community.
Over the past 24 years, WCRC has served more than 75,000 people and its initial pioneering efforts raised the bar for other cancer service providers. The annual Swim a Mile is WCRC's biggest fundraising effort and raises nearly one-third of their budget.
The Swim will be held at Mills College Trefethen Aquatic Center in Oakland, October 2-3, 2010 from 10am to 4pm. For information on registering for the Swim a Mile, call 510-601-4040 x105 or visit: http://www.wcrc.org/swim/index.htm.
