Designed for the Agusta NH90 Helicopter, a twin engine, tactical transport and multi-role naval helicopter, Galileo Avionica's GA-MAP is a map generation and control facility featuring geographical and tactical information. The output generated is designed to ease navigation during either normal or inclement weather conditions. The GA-MAP is also a highly standardized, cost-effective solution that developers can leverage and re-use for other applications.
"In today's aerospace and avionics market, competition is fierce and Galileo Avionica strives to deliver the most cost-effective and reliable products for our customers," said Alberto Avanzati, MCS Application SW Engineering manager. "In order to speed our total development time for this state-of-the-art mapping system, we knew that by standardizing on proven device software from the outset, we could reduce development time and cost and focus on the applications for which we are renowned. Selecting Wind River's Platforms enabled us to deliver the GA-MAP to Agusta ahead of schedule, meeting our project objectives while simultaneously surpassing our customer's expectations."
To develop this new map generation and control system, Galileo Avionica standardized on Wind River's General Purpose Platform, its hardware assisted tools and software assisted tools. Because Wind River's software is proven and easy to use, Galileo Avionica was able to develop this innovative map generation and control system faster and deliver the prototype ahead of schedule. By accelerating prototype development, Galileo Avionica's customer, Agusta, had additional time for final modifications and testing.
"When Galileo Avionica set out to build GA-MAP, they made a strategic decision to select Wind River's industry-leading device software for all of their needs," said Andreas Pabinger, vice president EMEA for Wind River. "By selecting Wind River, Galileo Avionica could reduce its development costs and speed their time to market. Galileo Avionica is a prime example of how by standardizing device software development, companies develop and run device software better, faster, at a lower cost and more reliably."
Additionally, all avionics systems have to be certified according to the RTCA DO-178B safety standard, and Galileo Avionica's GA-MAP product may require in the future Level B compliance. Galileo Avionica developers will also consider Wind River's Platform for Safety Critical, in order to reach Level B certification. Wind River's Platform for Safety Critical libraries include FAA certification materials and documentation, so Galileo Avionica will only need to certify the application portion of the GA-MAP product, speeding the lengthy and rigorous process of FAA certification.
