CERNET Has Selected Motorola's HotZone Duo for Public Access on Campuses Across China

Finanznachrichten News

HONG KONG, Dec. 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Motorola, Inc. announced today that China Education and Research Network (CERNET) has selected Motorola's HotZone Duo solution to provide public access for three campuses. These three universities were selected as part of the pilot for CERNET's campus Wi-Fi initiative. CERNET performed rigorous technical testing to certify that HotZone Duo provides the high performance, scalability and support for the new IPv6 protocol, insuring that it meets or exceeds the requirements for China's Next Generation Internet (CNGI) project. CERNET's deployment of HotZone Duo will allow teachers, students and researchers ubiquitous wireless access to online courses, research, educational tools and a breadth of communication possibilities from anywhere on campus.

The Chinese government's CNGI initiative is a five-year plan to achieve a prominent position in cyberspace through the early adoption of IPv6, the Network layer IP standard used by electronic devices to exchange data. According to CERNET, funded by the Chinese government and directly managed by the Chinese Ministry of Education, it selected HotZone Duo for its ability to provide exceptional coverage and throughput, fulfilling their comprehensive and growing wireless access needs

"Motorola's HotZone Duo was the first and most comprehensive wireless network solution to meet our core requirements for seamlessly supporting IPv6, matching our vision for leadership in the next generation of China's internet initiatives," said CERNET's Wi-Fi Campus Project Leader, Li GuangTao. "The ease of installation and the quality of support has enabled us to undertake rapid implementations in the first three universities. We hope to expand our use of HotZone Duo across CERNET's managed campuses throughout China."

The HotZone Duo solution, a high performance, cost-effective meshed Wi-Fi network, provides scalable, area-wide wireless broadband access for large and small deployments. Designed to maximize throughput and coverage, while delivering unmatched wireless connectivity, HotZone Duo meets aggressive cost and return on investment (ROI) targets. Its small size, minimal visual impact and low power consumption increases mounting location flexibility while achieving high community acceptance and helping to reduce monthly operational costs. In addition, HotZone Duo networks are designed to support the final 802.11s standard for meshing Wi-Fi systems via a simple Over-the-Air firmware update.

"We are excited to be a part of CERNET's strategic vision of spearheading CNGI initiatives. Their leadership in offering advanced technologies to China's research and education society positions China for continued growth both economically and intellectually," says Ruey-Bin Kao, President of Motorola in China. "HotZone Duo has the capacity to support not only CERNET's current initiatives, but also China's growing market for technologies and applications overall. We look forward to expanding to other CERNET campuses across China and continuing to be a part of their technological leadership."

The innovative design of the HotZone Duo solution offers a choice of either single radio (2.4GHz, 802.11b/g) or dual (2.4GHz, 802.11b/g and 5.8GHz, 802.11a) network configurations to best meet end user capacity and coverage requirements. The HotZone Duo solution leverages Motorola's exclusive MeshConnex(TM) routing, which minimizes dynamic RF changes in outdoor networks, while it maximizes data throughput and link stability. Additionally, MeshManager(TM), Motorola's carrier class Element Management System (EMS), provides configuration, security policies, reporting and Over- the-Air (OTA) software updates. This combination of technologies enables a robust self-forming, self-healing network that provides the flexibility and scalability needed for CERNET's certain growth and technological advancements.

"We are pleased to announce this deployment with CERNET which further demonstrates Motorola's global commitment to wireless broadband initiatives," said Jim Welch, Vice President of Motorola Wireless Broadband Products. "Motorola shares CERNET's vision of deploying wireless networks that provide broad access to education and research tools in addition to enabling a wide range of applications, devices and systems for the next wave of internet activity."

HotZone Duo is part of Motorola's MOTOwi4(TM) portfolio of wireless broadband solutions and services that creates, complements and completes IP networks. Delivering IP coverage to virtually all spaces, MOTOwi4 includes wi4 Fixed Broadband, wi4 Mesh, wi4 Broadband over Power Line, and wi4 WiMAX solutions for private and public networks.
