
McDermott Will & Emery is very pleased to announce that senior intellectual property litigator Sarah Chapin Columbia has joined the Firm's Intellectual Property, Media & Technology practice based in the Boston office. Ms. Columbia will further enhance the Firm's litigation and dispute resolution capabilities, and will serve as co-head of the Boston Intellectual Property Practice Group with partner Toby Kusmer.

Ms. Columbia is a trial lawyer who brings to the Firm 20 years of practice focused primarily on intellectual property. She has been lead counsel in a number of bet-the-company IP litigation matters. Her work includes patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret litigation, as well as counseling clients on overall intellectual property strategy.
She also has considerable experience in international and U.S. arbitration proceedings, and has represented clients in private arbitration proceedings under the rules and procedures of the International Chamber of Commerce, Swiss Chamber of Commerce, World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), American Arbitration Association (AAA) and others. Ms. Columbia will now have the opportunity to work with McDermott's International Dispute Resolution Practice Group with worldwide experience in arbitrations proceedings, including matters in Europe, South America and Asia.
Ms. Columbia, formerly chair of the Intellectual Property Department at Choate, Hall & Stewart in Boston, has represented clients in a multitude of industries, including software, life sciences, medical device and materials. She has appeared in federal district courts throughout the country, and is admitted to the U.S. Courts of Appeal for the Federal, First, Second and Ninth Circuits. She is also admitted to the Supreme Court of the United States.
Additionally, Ms. Columbia participates in an array of community activities. She is an officer on the board of Family Service of Greater Boston and on the Executive Committee of the Boston Lawyers Group dedicated to increasing the number of attorneys of color in Boston area law firms and businesses, an active participant in the United Way of Massachusetts Bay. In addition, she is a member of the Boston Athenaeum, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Science, and the New England Aquarium and has previously served on the board of the Boy and Girls Club of Charlestown. She also participates in the Wesleyan University Alumni Association and Alumni Schools Committee.
Ms. Columbia earned her J.D. magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School, her MPP from the John F. Kennedy School of Government and her B.A. from Wesleyan University. She is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the Boston Bar Association, the Boston Patent Law Association and the Massachusetts Bar Association.
