
The Arizona Technology Council today announced the appointment of four new executive officers and 10 new directors to its Board, named on October 23, 2008 at its recent board meeting in Phoenix.
The following newly appointed executive officers will serve two-year terms ending October 31, 2010: Chairman Steve Phillips, CIO, Avnet; Chairman Emeritus Dr. Michael Berens, director, Cancer & Cell Biology Division, TGen; Secretary Ray Harris, Esq., director, Fennemore Craig; and Treasurer Kevin McHolland, CPA, partner, Ernst & Young.
Christopher Smith, MBA, manager, Government and Regulatory Affairs, Cox Communications; and Dan Mazzola, Ph.D., engagement architect, Sun Microsystems, will continue to serve on the Executive Committee for the same two-year term. Two vice chairman positions remain open to be filled at a later date.
Steven G. Zylstra, president & CEO, Arizona Technology Council, remains as an executive officer, bringing the total number of executive officers to nine, including the two open positions.
The newly appointed directors that will serve three-year terms ending October 31, 2011 are: David Beauchamp, partner, Bryan Cave; Thomas Campbell, partner, Lewis and Roca; Kathleen A. Collins, Mesa functional chief engineer, Boeing; John Cummerford, shareholder, Intellectual Property & Technology, Technology, Media & Telecommunications, Greenburg Traurig; Joe Drazek, partner, Quarles and Brady; MaryAnn Guerra, president, TGen Accelerators, LLC and chief business officer, TGen; Carl Lytikainen, senior vice president of Technical Services, Lumension Security; Jane Poynter, president, Paragon Space Development Corporation; Dr. R. F. "Rick" Shangraw, vice president for Research and Economic Affairs, Arizona State University; and Judith K. Weiss, partner, Perkins Coie Brown & Bain.
Serving for an indefinite term, the following individuals have been appointed as Director's Emeritus: Chairman Emeritus Dr. Michael Berens, director, Cancer & Cell Biology Division, TGen; Joanne Carthey Bradley, COO, Namescape Corporation; Charles Jirauch, partner, Quarles & Brady LLP; Quinn Williams, shareholder, Greenberg Traurig LLP; and Mark Schonau, CFO, Insysrx;

"As the new chairman, I will oversee an agenda that continues to build valuable programs and services for all members and supports technology innovation and growth."
In addition to the Council's seven executive officers, the new appointments bring the number of directors to 33. The Arizona Technology Council's executive officers and board of directors serve in an advisory and fiduciary role by representing the interests of the state's technology industries in the Council's strategic planning and ongoing operations.
Directors departing due to term limitations include respected industry leaders whose experience has been invaluable as the Arizona Technology Council as it continues its efforts to promote research, education, access to a highly skilled workforce and tax reform to level the global playing field.
