University of California, Irvine Extension, the continuing education arm of UC Irvine, today announced a new course titled "Mobile Development for Apple iPhone and iTouch" for the winter quarter. Since the inception of Apple's App Store in 2007, the number of applications available has jumped from 500 to 100,000—an increase of nearly 10,000 percent. UC Irvine Extension's five-week course will offer participants a first-hand look into this burgeoning industry and the practical skills required to develop their own applications.
"Market insiders predict that companies will make a significant investment into the creation of new smartphone programs, opening the door for both experienced and novice professionals," explained Dr. Dave Dimas, director of UC Irvine Extension's engineering, sciences and information technology programs. "This new course will offer participants a hands-on experience in the development environment—enabling UC Irvine Extension's students to create what could possibly be the next big Apple app."
Starting Jan. 12, "Mobile Development for Apple iPhone and iTouch" will provide a general introduction to mobile programming; compare strategies from Apple, Blackberry and Microsoft; and discuss XCode development. In addition, participants will develop applications in Objective C and then test and deploy them to the iPhone. The course also will explore the integration of phone-specific features such as the accelerometer, touch screen, GEO positioning, sound and Web access.
"UC Irvine Extension has allowed me to create a very interactive course," shared Ralf Brockhaus course instructor and Release Manager for the Business Process Manager and Active Content Suite at IBM. "Each class will start with a traditional classroom lecture and will conclude with the lab portion, in which students will actually create an Apple app from idea to implementation."
"Mobile Development for Apple iPhone and iTouch" is the first of several new courses being offered by UC Irvine Extension's Engineering, Sciences and Information Technology department, created to meet the demand for smartphone application development skills. Other courses will provide students with the knowledge and experience to develop applications for the highly successful Blackberry from Research in Motion (RIM) and the new and exciting Google Android entry into the smart phone product line.
