MICHIGAN CITY, IN -- (Marketwire) -- 12/10/10 -- To save money and ensure a fresh supply of bedding material, farmers are turning to Bedding Recovery Units (BRU), a technology from Bauer Group affiliate FAN Separator, which turns cow manure into clean, dry bedding.
"Before we installed the BRU, we were buying a $2,200 load of kiln dried sawdust a week," says Mark Brisson, who tends to 850 dairy cows in Shoreham, Vt. "Now we're saving thousands of dollars a month just on bedding."
One BRU can reclaim 25-30 cubic yards per day of high quality bedding material. The self-contained cycle reduces manure management costs, improves cow comfort, and boosts milk output.
Rick Beck, a FAN equipment dealer in Corfu, NY, says it's typical for a 1,000-head operation to pay $2,000 or more weekly for bedding. "The costs savings of turning manure into bedding, plus the added disposal savings, can recover the typical BRU installation cost in 30 months or less."
How it works
The BRU is easy to use, and only requires minimal maintenance such as changing oil, greasing, and cleaning screens monthly. How it works:
1. Raw manure is pumped from the collection pit into the press screw separator, technology from Bauer's affiliate company FAN. There, undigested fibers are separated from the liquid.
2. Separated solids are fed into a 30-foot-long rotating drum by way of a patented conveyor system.
3. It takes the material about 12 to 18 hours to pass through the drum, where microorganisms act on the material. The temperature inside the drum rises to about 150°F, hot enough to kill pathogens that cause mastitis and other costly diseases.
4. The dry bedding material is moved by an auger or conveyor to an intermediate storage area.
