The Smithsonian and TSA will mark the 10-year anniversary of Sept. 11 in a ceremony with remarks from Smithsonian, TSA and other federal officials-including video remarks by Janet Napolitano, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security-as well as musical selections by a TSA officer and the DC Youth Orchestra. A moment of silence and reflection will take place at 8:46 a.m.-the time American Flight 11 crashed into the World Trade Center's North Tower-in front of the Star-Spangled Banner gallery.
Sept. 11 is the final day for the public to see the museum's unique display of objects, "September 11: Remembrance and Reflection," a close-up view of more than 50 objects from New York, the Pentagon and Shanksville, Pa., as well as new acquisitions from TSA. Objects include airplane fragments, a crushed FDNY fire truck door, a Pentagon building map and various objects recovered from offices. The display is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
In December 2001, Congress named the National Museum of American History the nation's official repository for artifacts related to Sept. 11, 2001.
