U.S. growers will have continued access to SmartStax® corn hybrids due to EPA's recent registration extension of this game-changing stacked-trait technology.
"EPA's registration extension of SmartStax and Dow AgroSciences Refuge Advanced® powered by SmartStax is particularly timely given recent reports of suspected pest resistance to certain single mode of action products," said Cole Hansen, Dow AgroSciences U.S. Seeds Traits Marketing Manager.
"Stacked-trait corn products like SmartStax with multiple modes of action offer customers the broadest insect protection and therefore the greatest value. SmartStax is harder for insects to develop resistance to, and multiple modes of action offer significant increases in pest control and trait durability," Hansen said.
"SmartStax also offers reduced refuge not possible with single-trait products and is the best choice for maximizing whole-farm yield potential," Hansen added. "Dow AgroSciences makes SmartStax and Refuge Advanced powered by SmartStax available in the latest genetics, and they continue to demonstrate exceptional yield performance in the marketplace."
"Dow AgroSciences will be offering SmartStax and Refuge Advanced in a diversity of hybrids throughout the Corn Belt in 2012," Hansen said.
"Time limits on U.S. registrations are typical for insect-protected biotechnology crops," Hansen noted. "The EPA's registration extension of SmartStax hybrids and Refuge Advanced provides for grower access in future plantings to the broadest spectrum insect protection available."
About SmartStax and Refuge Advanced
SmartStax hybrids and
Refuge Advanced powered by SmartStax sold by the affiliated Dow
AgroSciences seed brands maximize whole-farm yield potential by reducing
above- and below-ground refuge requirements from 20 percent to 5
percent. These elite hybrids deliver the broadest spectrum in-plant
insect protection — including effective control of European corn borer,
corn rootworm, corn earworm, fall armyworm, western bean cutworm and
black cutworm — through multiple modes of action expressed throughout
the entire plant, minimizing the potential for resistance. SmartStax and
Refuge Advanced hybrids from Dow AgroSciences are available in the
following seed brands: Mycogen Seeds, Brodbeck Seed, Dairyland Seed,
Pfister Seeds, Prairie Brand, RenzeSeeds and Triumph Seeds.
Refuge Advanced powered by SmartStax is a blend of 95 percent high-yielding SmartStax hybrids paired with 5 percent agronomically comparable, non-insect-traited seed in a single bag. Multiple modes of action in SmartStax allow a refuge reduction to 5 percent in the Corn Belt, and the seed blend in Refuge Advanced eliminates the need for a separate structured refuge.
