EDMONTON, ALBERTA -- (Marketwire) -- 02/16/13 -- The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence today announced three local investments, including two service contracts and an education program, worth approximately $10 million to support activities of military personnel and to grow the local economy.
"Our Government continues to improve Canadian Armed Forces infrastructure ensuring that our men and women in uniform have the facilities they need to work and train, but also benefits the local economy" said Minister MacKay. "These investments are necessary to the management of Canadian Forces Base Edmonton and ensure military infrastructure is upgraded in a timely manner."
Minister MacKay announced a $4.6 million contract award to Sprague-Rosser Contracting Co. Ltd. for the upgrade of sanitary and storm sewer systems. The purpose of this project is to prevent sanitary sewer back ups in military quarters as well as install a storm water sewer system which previously did not exist.
The Minister also announced a $1.28 million contract award to Tyco International of Canada Ltd, with Simplex Grinnell of Mississauga, Ontario for the inspection, testing and maintenance of fixed fire protection systems at Canadian Forces Bases Cold Lake, Suffield, and Wainwright.
Finally, Minister MacKay shared the news that Lockheed Martin Mission Systems and Sensors announced an investment in the University of Alberta to support the establishment of a training program related to the aerospace sector. This education programme, valued at approximately $3.7 million, will largely benefit undergraduate and graduate engineering students. The Government remains firmly committed to ensuring that its investments in defence also translate into investments in Canadian jobs. The Industrial and Regional Benefits Policy or IRB Policy is a key tool to ensure that government defence procurement translates into high-quality, long-term business opportunities for Canadian firms.
These investments highlight once again the Department of National Defence's commitment to the health and safety of the Canadian Armed Forces members and civilian personnel working on the bases and wings across Canada. The Government of Canada conducted an open, fair, and transparent competition process to award the contract for these services and works closely with Industry Canada to increase the benefits to the local economy of the local economy.
