The Chicago School of Professional Psychology Named to President's Honor Roll for Community Service

Finanznachrichten News

LOS ANGELES, March 13, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Chicago and Los Angeles Campuses of The Chicago School of Professional Psychology (TCSPP) were each named to the 2013 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. This is the sixth consecutive year the Chicago Campus has earned this prestigious recognition, and the first year for the Los Angeles Campus. This designation is the highest honor a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement.

"We are so proud of the tremendous contributions of our Chicago and Los Angeles Campuses to not only help prepare our graduates for successful careers through community service, but to serve as active leaders locally and globally throughout their lives," said National President Michele Nealon-Woods, Psy.D., The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. "We're honored to receive the prestigious Honor Roll awards, and owe much of it to our students, faculty and staff who are collectively making meaningful change every day."

The Chicago School of Professional Psychology earned the award for its efforts to support local partners and connect students to a myriad of community service, service learning, and community-based research projects. Through their internship, practicum and volunteer experiences, TCSPP students perform more than 700,000 hours of pro bono community service each year supporting many populations - from those with disabilities and U.S. veterans to at-risk youth and the homeless, to name a few.

At the Chicago Campus, TCSPP student leaders work with a variety of organizations, including partnering with Illinois Connections for Families of the Fallen for the past three years. The organization is a collaborative effort of representatives from more than 15 local and national agencies dedicated to helping families of fallen service members by providing support and resources. Students from TCSPP developed toolkits that focus on bereavement, coping with losing a loved one from suicide, resilience, and many other mental health issues to help this population.

Both the Los Angeles and Irvine Campuses operate successful TCSPP Counseling Centers, providing high-quality mental health services to diverse populations at a time when many mental health agencies have shut their doors due to budget cuts. The program offers TCSPP students the opportunity to provide affordable clinical, consultation and outreach services to surrounding communities in an outpatient setting while receiving high-quality, culturally sensitive supervision and training by licensed staff.

Inspired by the thousands of college students who traveled nationwide to support relief efforts along the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina, the Corporation for National and Community Service has administered the award since 2006 and manages the program in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, as well as the American Council on Education and Campus Compact.

The Chicago School of Professional Psychology
