In an hour-long interview, Page and Woods discussed ways to streamline and improve Maine's higher education system. Reflecting on his first year as chancellor, Page talked about his goal of making education more accessible for Mainers. In January 2012, the University froze in-state tuition for the first time in 25 years.
"We have to find ways to make education more affordable for Maine residents," Page said.
Page, who is tasked with leading the repositioning of the UMaine system to meet 21st century higher education needs, also discussed his vision for attracting more students from out of state and the importance of building partnerships between universities and local business. Woods and Page also talked about Maine's challenges in attracting and maintaining young, innovative entrepreneurs.
"The University of Maine is a great sandbox for student innovation," Woods said. "We need to find ways to attract and keep these highly-educated students here so that they can then explore their ideas and launch business ventures that will have real economic benefit in our communities."
