Bikes For The World And DICK'S Sporting Goods Announce Second Annual Bike Trade-in Program

Finanznachrichten News

ARLINGTON, Va., May 3, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --Today, Bikes for the World, the nation's largest non-profit bicycle reuse organization announces their second annual bike trade-in program in partnership with DICK'S Sporting Goods, Inc. (NYSE: DKS), the leading U.S. based full-line sporting goods retailer. Building upon the success of last year's program, Bikes for the World and DICK'S Sporting Goods will again look to collect and repurpose thousands of donated bikes for those in need.

From Sunday, May 5 to Saturday, May 11, consumers will have the opportunity to support the initiative by bringing in their used bike to a local DICK'S Sporting Goods store. Customers who participate in the trade-in will receive a discount toward a new bike purchase.

Bikes for the World will repurpose and distribute the donated bikes to lower income communities in the U.S. and around the world. In 2012, over 4,000 bikes were donated during the inaugural Bike Trade-In program.

"This type of initiative in partnership with DICK'S Sporting Goods is essential to growing our mission," said Keith Oberg, Director of Bikes for the World. "As a result of last year's collaboration, we expanded our deliveries of suitable used bicycles to lower-income communities by almost 50%, enhancing many more livelihoods through better transportation and generating skilled employment in bicycle repair and maintenance."

Bikes for the World is an active and unique part of the national bicycle advocacy and charitable community that supplies 20 non-profit programs in the Washington DC area and around the world including the Philippines, Ghana, Kenya, Namibia, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Uganda, Barbados, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Panama. Since January 2005, Bikes for the World has donated, on average, nearly 10,000 bicycles annually-including spare parts and accessories, these donations now total over $3.5 million--quietly becoming the nation's largest bicycle reuse program. In April 2013, Bikes for the World placed its 75,000th bike for donation to help people who need affordable transportation overseas.
