SANTA MONICA, Calif., May 16, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --
What: | The Broad Stage and LA Opera have joined forces to co-produce the world premiere ofDulce Rosa,a fully-staged opera by composer Lee Holdridge and librettist Richard Sparks-their largest-scale collaboration to-date-based on celebrated Chilean novelist Isabel Allende's short story "Una Venganza" ("An Act of Vengeance").Dulce Rosais a tale of romance and ruin, of revenge and redemption set in aSouth American country in the early 1950s. "The story is based on the tragedy of a young woman called Dulce Rosa who spent years planning how to punish the man who had raped her and killed her family. It doesn't sound like a love theme, does it? Trust me, it is" says Allende. "We're not calling it the "r-word," and tiptoeing around it," says Sparks, "I would answer that Dulce Rosa isn't "about" rape. It is about a number of other r-words: revenge, and the impossibility thereof. It is about redemption, and revolution (both personal and politicial), about ruin and renewal." Placido Domingo, The Eli and Edythe Broad General Director of LA Opera, will conduct the production featuring the LA Opera Chorus and Orchestra at The Broad Stage. The title role will be performed by Uruguayan soprano Maria Eugenia Antunez, with Mexican baritone Alfredo Daza as Rosa's nemesis Tadeo Cespedes, and American tenor Greg Fedderly as Rosa's father, Senator Orellano. The media art director and set designer is Yael Pardess, with costumes by Durinda Wood, lighting by Anne Militello, and projections by Jenny Okun. Opening Night at The Broad Stage will begin at 6:30 PM with a photo opportunity with Placido Domingo and Isabel Allende at 7:15pm (in English and Spanish). Dulce Rosa will be sung in English with projected English supertitles. Dulce Rosa contains scenes for mature audiences. |
