SEOUL (dpa-AFX) - HyundaiMotor America, a part of South Korean automaker Hyundai Motor Co. (HYUD.L, HYMLF.PK, HYMTF.PK), said Monday that its US sales in May rose 2 percent to 68,358 units from 67,019 units last year, aided by strong sales of Elantra brand.
'May was a high-velocity sales month for us, with the post-Memorial Day frenzy leaving us well positioned for the summer selling season,' said Dave Zuchowski, executive vice president of national sales.
'Our core products - Elantra, Sonata and Santa Fe - all performed exceptionally well. We're selling each of these three U.S-built products as fast as we can build them,' added Zuchowski.
Elantra sales at 25,090 units were up 33 percent over last May, representing the shift in U.S. production mix to meet surging Elantra demand.
Sonata sales meanwhile fell to 20,194 units from 20,765 units a year ago, even as the company noted that demand remains strong, somewhat constrained by production mix in Alabama.
