NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwired) -- 06/18/13 -- Riding high on Billboard's "Hot 100," with a song she penned within minutes in a hotel room, "I Love It (Feat. Charli XCX)," her RIAA platinum certified collaboration with Swedish pop duo Icona Pop; Charli XCX has announced details of her next North American headline tour. The dates celebrate the acclaimed singer/songwriter's breakthrough debut album, "TRUE ROMANCE," out now on IAMSOUND, getting underway on August 30th at Vancouver's Venue Nightclub and continuing through late September (see itinerary below). Pre-sale tickets are available now exclusively via tixx1.artistarena.com/charlixcx; for complete tour details please visit www.charlixcxmusic.com/events. Shows will be supported by Los Angeles-based indie rock outfit Kitten, as well as indie pop trio Little Daylight, on select dates.
The upcoming headline trek comes hot off the heels of Charli XCX's explosive performance at this past weekend's Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Manchester, Tennessee. "A welcome injection of good vibes and high energy," declared Idolator of the set. The Tennessean praised Charli's "sticky-sweet and strange electronic pop," noting the crowd's ecstatic response to her "unexpected cover of the Backstreet Boys' 1999 smash 'I Want It That Way.'" The applause followed a series of Bonnaroo previews in which Charli XCX was named among the most anticipated artists at the festival. Associated Press named her one of their 10 "Must-See Acts at Bonnaroo" (featured in a wide range of media outlets, including NPR, The Huffington Post, and newspapers across the country). In addition, SPIN named the British-born artist as one of their 30 "Must-See Acts at Bonnaroo 2013," making special mention of her "perfectly goth cover of the Backstreet Boys' 'I Want It That Way.'"
"TRUE ROMANCE" -- which includes the hit singles, "You're The One" and "You (Ha Ha Ha)" -- earned some of the year's most rapturous reviews upon its release earlier this year. "Snaky, mesmerizing glitch-pop," declared Entertainment Weekly, while Billboard commended the album for possessing "plenty of monster hooks, killer beats and equally bratty kiss-offs... (Charli XCX) packs just as much sass into her dreamy electro-pop songs as she does catchy melodies." Stereogum named "TRUE ROMANCE" as its "Album of the Week," stating, "Charli seems to skip right across ideas and words and genre boundaries because she's never known a world where those things get in the way." Rolling Stone tagged Charli XCX as an "Artist to Watch," proclaiming, "Her rhymes -- all street swagger and steamy gothic heartache -- flash like low-rent neon. The effect can be breathtaking." "Her collage of pop dreams, electro flash, and diary-rage lyrics could very well create a new generation of pop stars," wrote SPIN, while Pitchfork waxed fully rhapsodic about "TRUE ROMANCE" and Charli XCX's extraordinary future: "Like 90s pop stars turned 10s pop sophisticates Justin Timberlake and Beyoncé, Charli XCX stamps her personality across the entire project... 'TRUE ROMANCE' suggests she'll be worth following for a while. On Tumblr, Instagram, and whatever comes next, sure, but musically most of all."
The upcoming tour sees Charli XCX continuing on her non-stop schedule, having already spent much of the past year knocking out audiences both here and abroad. This weekend's Bonnaroo set capped a major North American tour, which included both sold-out headline dates, as well as dates alongside Elektra recording artist Marina & The Diamonds. In addition, Charli XCX's phenomenal string of performances at Austin, Texas' annual South By Southwest (SXSW) extravaganza drew still more critical approbation. The New York Times praised her "furious, catchy, electronic dance-pop songs about being a woman scorned," while the Washington Post noted that she "sang like a child of Madonna (small voice, XXL attitude) and danced as if she fully intended to leave Austin a superstar." Idolator hailed Charli as "freakishly energetic" and "unique," with SPIN declaring that her "hair-tossing is award-worthy." Perhaps Urban Outfitters summed it up best: "Charli XCX is badass."
Charli XCX recently unveiled "What I Like" as the latest single from "TRUE ROMANCE," with its companion video -- directed by her frequent collaborator, award-winning filmmaker Ryan Andrews -- now streaming at her official YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/officialcharlixcx. The new clip follows upon the album's spectacular first single, "You (Ha Ha Ha)," and its companion video, which is fast approaching 1 million individual page views at www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtrHH1BDlzk.
Born Charlotte Aitchison in pastoral Herfordshire, England, Charli XCX has quickly proven an unqualified worldwide phenomenon. She made her first splash with a series of remarkable singles, including "Nuclear Seasons" and "Stay Away," which Pitchfork hailed as "a slow-burning kiss-off of a pop song with low-lying synths, industrial textures, and a whole lot of shadowy atmosphere." "You're The One" received ever greater accolades upon its 2012 arrival, with Billboard praising "its frisky beats, Euro-pop synths, and vaguely Middle Eastern melodies" while also naming Charli to its "21 Under 21: Ones To Watch 2012" ranking. Charli made additional waves with a string of sold out US headline shows (as well as dates supporting both Santigold and Coldplay) leading to her appearance in a range of year-end packages, including 2012 wrap-ups and 2013 predictions for Rolling Stone, Time, Stereogum, Idolator and Billboard to name a few.
