Marian Elizabeth Neal from Fremd High School and Alessia Serafino from Palatine High School both received the merit-based scholarship for their excellent academic achievement and community involvement. The $10,000 scholarships are payable in $2,500 annual installments over four years. This fall, Neal will study mechanical engineering at Purdue University. Serafino will attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and study mechanical engineering.
"Talented students like Marian Elizabeth and Alessia are our future," said Jeff Palombo, sector vice president and general manager of Northrop Grumman's Land and Self Protection Systems Division. "We are proud to support some of the best and brightest students in our area, and inspire them as they start down a path toward a successful career in engineering and related fields."
The Northrop Grumman Engineering Scholars program is aimed at supporting promising high school seniors who intend to pursue a career in an engineering-related field. Candidates must plan to attend an accredited college or university school of engineering as a full-time student in an approved engineering program. The funds can be used for tuition, books, room and board, and lab fees.
A committee of Northrop Grumman employees selected the Engineering Scholars winners. To be eligible, each scholarship applicant had to be a resident of Rolling Meadows, Arlington Heights, Hoffman Estates, Inverness, Mt. Prospect or Palatine, and be a graduating senior this spring from a public or accredited private high school in the state. Applicants also had to have a minimum composite SAT score of 1,700 or ACT score of 27 and a minimum GPA of 3.5. Recipients of any other Northrop Grumman-sponsored scholarship were not eligible. The committee also took into consideration work experience, community involvement and extracurricular activities.
Northrop Grumman is a significant financial and in-kind contributor to educational outreach programs aimed at encouraging young people to consider engineering and science-related career fields. The company supports multiple High School Involvement Partnership programs to excite student interest in science, technology, engineering and math.
