Canton Museum of Art Hosts Second "Brader Day," in Search of Local Works From 19th Century Artist Ferdinand Brader / Exhibition of Brader Drawings Coming to the Museum in 2014

CANTON, OH--(Marketwired - July 09, 2013) - The Canton Museum of Art (CMA) will host a second "Bring Your Brader to the Museum Day," also known as "Brader Day," on Saturday, July 20, 2013, from 10:00am to 2:00pm. Owners of potential drawings from 19thcentury folk artist Ferdinand Brader, whose intricate work featured family farms and businesses in western Pennsylvania and northeast Ohio, are encouraged to bring their drawings to the CMA to be professionally identified, cataloged and photographed. Attendees also have an opportunity to speak with specialists about conservation, find their farms on old township maps and talk about family genealogy.

The event will be held at the Museum, 1001 Market Avenue North, in Canton.

Brader came to the United States from Switzerland in the early 1870s and traveled extensively in Pennsylvania and Ohio, supporting himself by creating large pencil drawings of the farms and properties where he was given residence. His estimated 980 drawings are strikingly detailed, many drawn from a unique aerial perspective. Brader identified the properties and owners in a caption along the bottom of each drawing. Many of the properties and buildings still exist -- from Stark, Tuscarawas and Portage counties in Ohio to Berks, Lancaster and Lebanon counties in Pennsylvania.

Currently, Brader researchers have identified 203 of the landscape drawings.

Local Brader scholar, Kathleen Wieschaus-Voss, will curate the December 2014 exhibition at CMA, "The Legacy of Ferdinand Brader." The exhibit will feature more than 40 Brader drawings. Collaborative exhibits at the McKinley Museum / Stark County Historical Society and at the Historical Society of Berks County will add to the number of Brader drawings to be seen at the same time.
