SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 08/21/13 -- Swinerton Builders, one of the nation's oldest and most trusted construction firms, has signed a contract with Telecom Real Estate Services (TRES) to build their new Block Data Center in Las Vegas. The TRES signing follows record revenue growth for Swinerton in 2012 and a significant project backlog in the critical facilities sphere for 2013.
"This project will require us to perform a unique scope of services under exacting conditions, including an aggressive schedule," commented Dave Higgins, Jr., senior vice president and manager of Swinerton's Critical Facilities division. "We are very excited to demonstrate our unique capabilities in a collaborative manner with the TRES team."
The project involves the conversion of an existing warehouse facility into a Tier III modular data center. The key activity will be the removal of an existing wood roof structure and with replacement of a steel structure designed to support the additional cooling equipment required.
The modular design allows for a high degree of flexibility for potential tenants, and the utilization of custom direct indirect air handlers allow for a low Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) and a corresponding reduction in operating costs.
Once complete it will be the first wholesale data center space in the Las Vegas market where large customers can construct their own data center space within a fully managed building with all the backup facilities. Kevin Keating, CEO of TRES, is the developer for H-R Reit, the Canadian real estate investment trust with a fair value of $10 billion. According to Keating, "The time was right for a product that appeals to large customers that want to control their environment. Customers can rent space ready for data center improvements or the space can be completely built ready for racks to be installed. If you have a large requirement of 1000+ kW of power, customers have complete flexibility."
The five acre, $50 million project is positioned nationally for disaster recovery as Las Vegas offers the perfect environment with close access to major markets, minimal chance of natural disaster, excellent communications infrastructure, and proximity to the major Southern California markets. Four blocks of 1200 kW of critical power are available in Phase 1 with total capacity of 1125 racks.
TRES has been building wholesale data centers for the industry since 1997 including one of the largest data centers in Downtown Los Angeles and has moved its corporate home to Las Vegas.
