The five-star rating is the highest quality rating awarded by CMS to nursing facilities in the United States. In Brownsville, Alta Vista Rehabilitation & Healthcare is the only skilled nursing facility with a five-star rating.

CMS created the Five-Star Quality Rating System to help consumers, their families and caregivers compare nursing facilities more easily. The system gives each nursing facility a quality rating of between one and five stars, with five being the highest rating. The system scores nursing facilities on State health inspections looking back three years, staffing patterns, and specific quality measures that offer information about how well the nursing facility is caring for its patients' physical and clinical needs. Ratings are published by CMS on its Nursing Home Compare website at www.cms.gov.
