TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 10/04/13 -- Save the Children Canada President and CEO, Patricia Erb, issued the following statement:
"Save the Children Canada applauds Minister Paradis and the Canadian government's direct and timely response in support of the United Nations Security Council's presidential statement urging Syria to grant immediate access for humanitarian agencies, like Save the Children, to deliver much needed emergency response, including food, medicine, and shelter.
Save the Children estimates that at least ten million Syrians are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance. Aid comes at a critical time, with the humanitarian situation set to deteriorate further as the bitter Middle Eastern winter sets in, and temperatures expected to drop below freezing at their lowest. Compounded by worsening conditions, children are now at a higher risk of suffering from severe hunger and malnutrition if they do not receive immediate support.
We thank the Canadian government for their continued support in helping Save the Children in its delivery of life-saving aid to thousands across Syria and hundreds of thousands of refugees who have fled their homes to escape the war. This call for immediate support will increase our ability to help innocent children impacted by this conflict."
