WJC Applauds Senate Introduction of the Nuclear Weapon Free Act of 2013

Finanznachrichten News

NEW YORK, Dec. 19, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --The World Jewish Congress, North America (WJC,NA) today applauded the introduction by twenty-six members of the US Senate of the Nuclear Weapon Free Act of 2013 that proposed prospective sanctions on Iran should the regime violate the interim Joint Plan of Action agreed to in Geneva or should Iran fail to reach a final agreement.

Evelyn Sommer, Chair, WJC, NA, said, "This legislation is an important step in preventing the Iranian regime from achieving nuclear weapons capability. While the interim agreement may have promise, many causes for profound concern remain. The Iranian regime remains the foremost promoter of global terrorism and has a long and abysmal record of human rights violations. The basic infrastructure to enrich uranium to develop weapons capability remains in place. This legislation requires placement of further sanctions on the Iranian petroleum sector and other pertinent elements of the Iranian economy in order to ensure that Iran will come to an agreement to cease its illegal program of nuclear weapons development. We applaud Senators Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) for their hard work in getting this bipartisan bill introduced and all those who are co-sponsors, including Senators Schumer, Graham, Cardin, McCain, Casey, Rubio, Coons, Cornyn, Blumenthal, Johanns, Hagan, Cruz, Donnelly and Blunt. We urge all the members of the US Senate to co-sponsor and pass this legislation. The momentum of the sanctions, which brought Iran to the negotiating table in the first place, needs to be continued and strengthened in order to ensure that a nuclear Iran will be prevented."
