Seed treatment refers to application of chemical or biological active ingredients to the seeds, which is done before seed packaging. Seeds are coated with fungicides, insecticides or with a combination of these to disinfect them from soil borne pathogenic organisms and storage insects. Seed treatment method is more effective and cost efficient than spraying of pesticides directly on plants, as the quantity required is less and hence leads to reduction in the amount of active substances required per acre of land. Few insecticides also help in increasing the stress tolerance of the plant, protecting it from heat and drought.
Pesticides are generally classified into insecticides, fungicides and herbicides. Pesticides are composed of active ingredients that help to repel or kill pests and are added in different concentrations as per the requirement. These active ingredients can be used together or alone for killing or repelling crop insects and other pathogenic insects. Few active ingredients are used on broad spectrum bases while some of them are used specifically to target certain insects.
The global seed market has been experiencing rapid development in recent years, owing to growing population and technological development. On the other hand, the environmental hazards of chemicals used in pesticides and growing restrictions on use of pesticides may hamper the growth of the seed treatment market.
In the global seed treatment market, nonchemical treatment i.e. treatments using biological agents is expected to have the highest growth rate. Due to increased environmental concern, demand for bio based seed treatment is increasing. The global bio-based seed treatment market is smallest in size but is expected to experience significant growth rate in the near future.
