RICHARDSON, TEXAS, March 6, 2014 -- The Verizon Foundation and Verizon's Women's Association of Verizon Employees (WAVE), in conjunction with the National Academy Foundation, are hosting students from five area high schools to expose students to information about careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). The students will have the opportunity to tour Verizon's disaster response vehicles and speak with employees at the company. These vehicles have responded to recent events such as Hurricane Sandy, the Colorado wildfires and the Moore, Okla., tornado.

These two vehicles available for touring are part of Verizon's Emergency Response Mobile Communications fleet and use satellite technology to provide critical communications services in a disaster area. The 53-foot emergency communications vehicle is configured with 23 work spaces, each with a VoIP phone and a data connection as well as a power outlet. The mobile office is one of four similar vehicles that are configured as a small office. With four fold-up desk surfaces and Ethernet and power jacks at each work station, business can be completed no matter what the circumstances.
WAVE is an employee group that encourages an environment for learning new skills as well as promotes networking, mentoring and addressing issues related to women in the workplace.
The National Academy Foundation (NAF) is an acclaimed network of career-themed academies that open doors for underserved high school students to viable careers. Nearly 5,000 business professionals volunteer in classrooms, act as mentors, engage NAF students in paid internships, and serve on local advisory boards.
