SAUGET, IL -- (Marketwired) -- 03/24/14 -- Gateway Terminals LLC ("Gateway"), a subsidiary of SEACOR Holdings Inc. (NYSE: CKH), today announced inauguration of service to handle heavy crude (bitumen). Marshall Bockman, Vice President, said, "We are pleased to report the successful discharge of a second unit train hauling Canadian crude from Alberta."
Gateway, which is located in Sauget, Illinois, has a direct connection to Canadian Northern Railway, which gives Canadian producers of bitumen direct access to America's important mid-continent refining market, and also an outlet to the Mississippi River, enabling cost effective delivery to the refineries on the Gulf Coast.
Gateway is one of the few unit train terminals in the mid-continent with a steam boiler system. The recently completed boiler upgrade allows Gateway to receive Canadian dilbit (diluted bitumen) during extreme weather conditions, such as those experienced this year. Bockman noted, "We expect to make additional modifications to the facility to allow the receipt of Canadian neat bitumen." The Gateway facility has four (4) 98,000 barrels of product storage capacity, and rail infrastructure to store up to 130 rail cars. Bockman added, "Gateway's direct connection on the Canadian Northern Railway and access from the Canadian Pacific Railway provides tar sands producers the opportunity to leverage competitive freight rates and access more markets." Gateway offers throughput rates as well as integrated transport packages through its relationship to the SEACOR group of companies.
