Marimekko Corporation, Press Release, 12 June 2013, at 9:05 AM
As part of its long-term expansion strategy in North America, Marimekko has been actively enhancing partnerships with high-class department stores and specialist retailers. In Mexico, three Marimekko shop-in-shops were opened in May and the beginning of June, and one more will open in mid-June. July will see the opening of seven shop-in-shops, of which six will be in Canada and one in the United States.
Mexico's leading department store chain El Palacio de Hierro opened its first three Marimekko shop-in-shops in May and the beginning of June. The fourth shop will open in mid-June. All the four shop-in-shops are located in Mexico City, and their range focuses on Marimekko's home décor products.
The Canadian modern furniture brand EQ3 opened the first Marimekko shop-in-shop in its flagship store in Toronto in September 2012. The shop has been a great success, and seven more openings are to follow this year in July. Of the new shop-in-shops, six will be in Canada, in Winnipeg, Montreal, Brossard, Calgary, Ottawa and Toronto, and one in the United States, in Emeryville, near San Francisco. The aim of the partnership contract between Marimekko and EQ3 is to open a total of ten Marimekko shop-in-shops by the end of 2014.
"Last year, we invested strongly in expanding the network of our own retail stores in the United States. One purpose of the expansion was to attract the attention of classy department stores and other retailers to our products. El Palacio de Hierro is a truly prestigious chain of department stores in Mexico, and we are extremely happy about our collaboration with them. We are equally pleased with our partnership with EQ3 and the opening of as many as seven Marimekko shop-in-shops in one month," says Sales Director Päivi Lonka.
Besides North America, Marimekko is also expanding its operations in its other main market areas, Northern Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. The main thrust in the expansion in 2013 is on opening retailer-owned Marimekko stores and shop-in-shops. Moreover, the company focuses on developing the business of the stores it opened in 2012.
