AJC Welcomes Senate Vote on CIA Detention and Interrogation Report

Finanznachrichten News

NEW YORK, April 3, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- AJC applauds the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence for its bipartisan 11-3 vote to release the executive summary of its report on the CIA's post-9/11 detention and interrogation program. President Obama recently announced that he is committed to declassifying the report.

"We urge the President to promptly declassify and release to the American people the executive summary, and the findings and conclusions covered by the Senate Committee vote," said E. Robert Goodkind, Chair of AJC's Jacob Blaustein Institute for the Advancement of Human Rights (JBI). "Looking ahead, the Senate Committee's study of the CIA's post-9/11 detention and interrogation program should be made public in full."

"Releasing the Committee's 6,300-page report would demonstrate the United States' commitment to developing national security policies based on the facts surrounding the CIA's interrogation, rendition and detention programs," Goodkind added. "This is important for bringing transparency to the issues."

On a related note, Goodkind urged "the U.S. to fully comply with its international legal obligations under the UN Convention against Torture and International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights."

AJC had sent letters to Committee members urging them to vote in favor of releasing the executive summary, findings and conclusions. AJC had previously welcomed the support of Committee members and Vice President Biden for releasing the Senate report.
