SAN FRANCISCO, April 26, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Findings from a study on the "Duration of Effect by Injection Volume and Facial Sub-Region for a Volumizing Hyaluronic Acid Filler in Treating Mid-Face Volume Deficit" will be presented by Jeffrey M. Kenkel, MD, professor and vice chair of Plastic Surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, TX, at the Annual Meeting of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), being held April 24-29 in San Francisco, CA.
Throughout life, aging shapes the face in common, predictable ways. Skin loses elasticity and facial muscles atrophy, resulting in an undesirable loss of volume. These effects can be especially evident in the mid-face, which includes the undereye and cheek area. Hyaluronic acid is a volumizing, hydrating injectable agent that is often used to fill out the mid-facial region, but the duration of its effects in this area have not previously been rigorously studied. Data from a new study now shows that hyaluronic acid treatment in the mid-face can lead to long-lasting results, with efficacy as long as two years in some regions of the face. Duration of effect was related to the volume of hyaluronic acid used and the facial region being treated.
"Most patients undergoing mid-face volume injections of hyaluronic acid filler understand that the results they see from treatment will be temporary and that sustaining improvement will require a return visit. The question is always 'How soon?'" said Dr. Kenkel. "The results from this study will now help physicians better prepare their patients and more accurately plan their next treatment visit. We now have a more concrete understanding of how to administer these kinds of treatments over time, and a more precise understanding of how to treat each mid-facial region."
The multicenter study involved 15 investigators throughout North America, who enrolled and treated 235 patients with hyaluronic acid filler for loss of volume in the mid-face. Both the treating physician and two additional blinded investigators assessed treatment results using the validated 6-point Mid-Face Volume Deficit Scale (MFVDS). The evaluations showed that hyaluronic acid treatment for age-related mid-face volume deficit was effective in the range of 2 mL injection volume per sub-region. The duration of results ranged from 15-24 months, with the longest duration of results in the anteromedial cheek region.
