CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas, May 6, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Bob Hilliard, a Texas lawyer and one of the nation's key players in the pursuit of claims against GM, filed a lawsuit today against General Motors after a GM Cobalt's ignition defect caused the vehicle to lose power and the resulting accident left a now 6-year-old little boy paralyzed.
The accident occurred in April 2009 when Trenton Buzard was one year old. He was a passenger in his great-grandmother's Chevy Cobalt. The Cobalt lost all power and Trenton's great-grandmother could not avoid a car that had drifted into her lane. GM confirmed this is one of the 13 accidents related to the defective ignition. Trenton's great-grandmother and aunt died on impact. Trenton, though properly strapped in his car seat, had his spinal cord severed by the force of the impact.
Hilliard who represents 53 families who have lost loved ones due to GM's defective ignition switch, as well as 273 injured victims, 63 of whom suffered catastrophic injuries said this tragedy was not just the work of a drunk driver:
Hilliard said, "The black box revealed that the car shut off two seconds before the accident which prevented Trenton's great-grandmother from being able to take any evasive action to avoid an accident. Two seconds can be a life time when you are trying to slow a vehicle down, or swerve out of the way.
Hilliard continued, "Trenton has never walked a day in his life. Paralyzed just days before his first birthday-GM has put him in a wheelchair for life."
PARENTS STRUGGLE FOR ANSWERS
Trenton's parents, Marie and Robert Buzard say they feel helpless when their little boy wants to know why he can't walk or play.
"He is just now fully understanding how different he is from his peers. We are determined to give him the best life we can," said Marie Buzard.
"GM caused this horrible accident and they must understand how difficult it is to live with this. How many other Trentons will there be before GM understands this?" asked Hilliard.
