SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., May 22, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --Northcentral University (NCU), a global online graduate school, today announced the addition of two Common Core-based post-baccalaureate certificates, Mathematics Excellence in the Common Core and English Language Arts Excellence in the Common Core. These graduate-level certificates are designed to prepare teachers to align their teaching with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Each certificate consists of four 8-week courses for a total of 12 master's - level credits.
The CCSS have been adopted by 44 states in the U.S. and the District of Columbia. These standards consist of learning outcomes that students should achieve by grade level in order to move forward in their education. The primary goal is to ensure high school graduates are prepared to attend college or enter the workforce.
"The Common Core State Standards represent a unique challenge for teachers who are now facing higher expectations for themselves and for meeting the needs of the students they serve," said Dean of NCU's School of Education Dr. Cindy Guillaume. "Our goal is to help our teachers meet and exceed any challenges they face as a result of these new standards by providing relevant information and actionable skills that are immediately applicable to the classroom."
"The Common Core initiative represents a unique opportunity to begin a more comprehensive, national discussion on best practices and approaches in math and English language arts," added NCU faculty member Dr. Casey Reason, who helped develop the curriculum for the new certificates. "By providing teachers with a short-term certificate they can complete in eight months or less, NCU offers practical application oriented training that will help teachers successfully teach in the Common Core and elevate their instructional practice."
The certificate programs are approved for financial aid, which is available to those who qualify. More information about these certificates is available at http://ncu.edu/CommonCore.
