MIAMI, FL -- (Marketwired) -- 05/31/14 -- It has been a little over four years that an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 shook the Caribbean country of Haiti. The tremor caused by the earthquake, which had its epicenter just 15 km outside of the capital city of Port-au-Prince, brought a lot of destruction to the people of Haiti, followed by approximately 50 aftershocks which further delayed the recovery after the earth stopped shaking. Not a group of people to give up easily, the Haitians soon got back on their feet, determined to rebuild their homes and streets and use this dramatic event to grow and come out even stronger than before.
Thanks to the support and donations from all around the world, Haiti is on its way to doing exactly that. One crucial aspect, now more than ever, is building and rebuilding schools. By making education accessible to the young generations, the people of Haiti can achieve a position in which they can help themselves and fight off poverty as well as the political upheavals. Currently, the country is still heavily reliant on outside support. Luckily, there are many foundations and even more donors who have not forgotten about the people, and especially the children, on the island of Hispaniola. Matt Argall, a prominent entrepreneur from Miami -- a city with close ties to Haiti thanks to the neighborhood "La Petite Haïti", which is home to thousands of Haitians -- made a major donation, inspired by his parents, who have been fervently supporting the cause for years.
"After I made a donation," Matt Argall tells us, "I was informed the money I donated was enough to put 100 kids through school. It gave me goose bumps hearing that. Maybe even more so since I have a school-aged son myself. What we take for granted here in the United States, can have an impact on the lives of an entire generation, even on an entire country in Haiti." The school project he helps funding, Argall explains, aims at educating today's children to achieve the self-sufficiency of Haitians of tomorrow, in order to bring the country one step closer to economic independence and sustainable growth.
