HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., Aug. 8, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Organizers for the 19th annual Surf City USA Marathon announced registration levels reached an all-time high for the month of July and attributed the high volumes to racers who are traveling from out of town to compete. California's Classic Oceanfront Race will take place on February 1st of next year in Huntington Beach, California.
"The Surf City USA Marathon is iconic and has become a destination event for those outside of Southern California," said Amy Tomchak, General Manager of the Surf City Marathon.
"Last year we had 33 countries and all 50 US states represented in our field of more than 21,000 runners. Racers and their supports traveling from out of town know this race will sell out, so they are already registering, and booking their travel and hotel accommodations for the 2015 event. We believe this explains why our July numbers are record-setting," Tomchak added.
As the largest combined oceanfront marathon and half marathon event in California, the Surf City USA Marathon draws over 21,000 participants and nearly 50,000 spectators each year. The race start and finish takes place in front of The Waterfront Beach Resort, a Hilton hotel, and features an exclusive oceanfront course along the Pacific Coast Highway, past the iconic Huntington Beach Pier and through legendary surfing beaches that define Southern California. Weekend highlights include the two-day Active Lifestyle Beach Expo and Michelob Ultra Post Race Beer Garden. Official Sponsors include Arrowhead, Michelob Ultra, Kona Brewing, the Waterfront Beach Resort, Dole, Vitalyte Sports Drink, Greenlayer Sports and Hoag Hospital.
Since 2006, Surf City fundraising participants helped raise over $2.1 million for the Irvine-based Free Wheelchair Mission's "Run for Mobility" program. Funds raised power the engineering and distribution of more than 40,000 wheelchairs which provide mobility to people around the world.
"Currently there are over 100 million people around the world who need wheelchairs and simply don't have access to them," said Don Schoendorfer, Founder & President, Free Wheelchair Mission.
"The vital funds raised through Run for Mobility at the Surf City USA Marathon play a major role in supporting our efforts to provide wheelchairs at no charge to impoverished people with disabilities living in developing nations. We are grateful to all those running and the generous sponsors who've helped make this marathon one of the premier running events in the country. We invite all those participating to become fundraisers by visiting www.freewheelchairmission.org/runformobility," Schoendorfer added.
