SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 09/08/14 -- United States Representative John Lewis (GA-5) will talk to San Francisco students and the community about the continuing struggle for equality as recounted in his acclaimed new graphic novel, March: Book One, at San Francisco's Calvary Presbyterian Church on Saturday, September 20th. The event, part of San Francisco Waldorf High School's Public Lecture Series, is moderated by Adam Hochschild, National Book Award-nominated historian, author, and professor at UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism.
John Lewis was a leader in many of the most dramatic campaigns of the Civil Rights movement: the lunch counter sit-ins, the Freedom Rides, the historic march in Selma, and the March on Washington, where he was the youngest speaker. To inspire a new generation, Congressman Lewis, co-writer Andrew Aydin, and award-winning artist Nate Powell collaborated on the book, a meditation "on the distance traveled since the days of Jim Crow and segregation."
Many years ago, John Lewis drew inspiration from the 1958 comic book Martin Luther King and the Montgomery Story, which explained the basics of nonviolent and passive resistance. Lewis chose the graphic novel format to share March's message of reconciliation and hope in the face of violence, setbacks and disappointments.
The event also includes an exhibit by photojournalist Matt Herron who documented the Civil Rights movement for Life, Look, Time, and Newsweek. His book Mississippi Eyes: The Story and Photography of the Southern Documentary Project honors this year's 50th Anniversary of Freedom Summer.
The event, co-sponsored by Glide Memorial Church, is part of a continuing public lecture series by San Francisco Waldorf High School that brings today's renowned authors, activists, artists, and thinkers together with students and community.
