Security expert Avira announced today that it has partnered with Computerbild, Europe's largest computer magazine, to provide the publication with more than 160 million compromised emails in an effort to help promote public education on the topic of personal online identity and how best to protect your personal information such as an email address.
The recent celebrity gate hacking scandal, with some celebrity emails potentially coming from an Apple iCloud breach highlights the importance of email security. The recent Gmail breach is another great example that breaches happens all the time.
Vinod Varma, head of engineering, R&D at Avira, said, "Online identity is perhaps the most critical issue facing the internet today. We have worked hard all year to build the most comprehensive database of public security breaches. Our partnership with Computerbild allows us to share that data with a much larger audience, and hopefully lead to greater diligence from users."
With Avira's new Silicon Valley R&D Lab established less than 2 months ago, the Computerbild partnership is an important milestone. Through the agreement, Avira will share more than 160 million compromised emails, one of the world's largest collections of breached email accounts with Computerbild. Avira's team will continue to share new data with the magazine on an ongoing basis to raise awareness of the issue.
Avira's list of compromised emails includes those from Gmail, Adobe, Snapchat, Forbes, Bell Canada, and Bigmoney jobs as well as others. The data is already included in Avira's iOS and Android mobile apps. All the data that Avira is providing will be available through Computerbild's Account alarm tool at http://www.computerbild.de/download/COMPUTER-BILD-Account-Alarm-10519005.html.
