PLACERVILLE, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 10/08/14 -- Today, Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians Chairman Nicholas Fonseca presented Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Calif., with a redline copy of Public Law 113-197, signed by President Barack Obama. McClintock authored the bill that became Public Law 113-197, and pushed the bill through a gridlocked congress. Fonseca presented the framed copy of the law to the congressman before El Dorado County business and community leaders at the Tribe's Red Hawk Casino.
On June 14, 2013, McClintock introduced H.R. 2388, into the United States House of Representatives a bill to authorize the Secretary of the Interior to transfer into trust 40.8 acres of certain federal lands located in El Dorado County, Calif., to the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians, a federally recognized tribe. The land transferred into trust was previously under the administrative jurisdiction of the Bureau of Land Management and was not being used.
Chairman Fonseca said, "We very much appreciate Tom McClintock championing this bill for the Tribe. The land transferred by this law was not used or maintained, constituting a fire hazard to the surrounding residents. Thanks to the congressman, the land will be used for residential housing, some common community buildings or recreational facilities and to work with the surrounding neighbors in order to maintain the rural nature of the community. We'd like to thank Tom McClintock for his long-time support of tribes and tribal sovereignty."
The president signed the bill into law on July 16, 2014. It is one of only 163 bills that have passed congress and been signed since the beginning of 2013.
