LAS VEGAS, NV--(Marketwired - April 12, 2015) - NAB Show -- Advantech (TWSE: 2395) today announced a strategic technology partnership with Socionext Inc., the new company formed from the well-established Fujitsu and Panasonic semiconductor businesses. Advantech will invest in the development of professional video solutions based on Socionext System-on-Chip technology to address the many challenges faced by the content transcoding market to keep pace with growing consumer demand for higher definition video. Content providers recognize the need for acceleration technologies that integrate seamlessly with current server solutions and can offer an immediate increase in density for video streaming and transcoding.
The need for higher quality, higher throughput transcoders dictates solutions that consume less power and integrate into existing servers without disrupting software compatibility or requiring fork-lift upgrades. From a performance perspective, the ability to increase encoding throughput by an order of magnitude per accelerator card compared to a server based software-only solution is extremely well received by both equipment and content providers according to Advantech.
"Focusing on enabling an intelligent planet through the facilitation of infrastructure for the Internet of things (IoT), we find our vision can be further strengthened through this strategic partnership with Socionext whose leading-edge system-on-chip solutions for video, imaging, networking, and IoT line up well with our company's long term direction," said KC Liu, CEO, Advantech. "With the exponential growth of connected devices in the world, we believe that video technology will create new user experiences that will help to fulfill our vision of the smart city. Socionext's quantum-leap in video processing technology boosts Advantech's video product lines with unrivalled advantages in video quality, video resolution and power saving for video infrastructure customers. We are pleased to announce our collaboration with Socionext in driving the emerging trends for a better tomorrow," he added.
"Adding multiple accelerator cards to a standard server can boost performance by over 40x at a fraction of the cost in power consumption," said David Lin, the Senior Director of Advantech Video Solutions Division. "Similar software-only scale out would mean adding a rack full of servers to a datacenter with the subsequent increased floor space, power bills and cooling requirements. Our technology partnership with Socionext will allow content and service providers to significantly reduce both operating expenses as well as capital expenditure while improving quality of experience for video consumers," he added.
"Socionext is pleased to announce this technology partnership with Advantech," said Amane Inoue, the President & COO of Socionext. "The combination of our SoC expertise in media processing and imaging with Advantech's proven design and OEM deployment experience will help accelerate next generation video services and open the doors to potential new revenue streams based on quality of service."
Advantech will be present at NAB 2015 in Las Vegas, demonstrating the first two products resulting from this partnership. The HVC-8700 and HVC-8701 encoder accelerators integrate the latest HEVC encoder SoC technology from Socionext, enable live UHDTV HEVC encoding at up to 20x less power consumption than a software-only solution, allowing OEMs to leverage the differentiating performance of specialized hardware with all the benefits of an off-the-shelf solution.
