COLUMBUS, OH -- (Marketwired) -- 06/16/15 -- SCI Engineered Materials, Inc. ("SCI") (OTCQX: SCIA), a global supplier and manufacturer of advanced materials for physical vapor deposition thin film applications that works closely with end users and OEMs to develop innovative, customized solutions, today announced it has hired Dr. Tzu-Chieh Lin to join SCI's research team as a Product Development Engineer.
Dr. Lin recently completed post-doctoral research at Kent State University's Liquid Crystal Institute. Prior to that she was engaged in post-doctoral research at Case Western Reserve University. Both of these research projects were focused on commercial applications for Liquid Crystals. She earned a Ph.D. in Physics from National Taiwan University and before coming to Ohio worked with AU Optronics Corporation, one of the largest manufacturers of TFT-LCD display panels in the world.
Last fall, SCI and Kent State University entered into a sponsored research agreement with the goal of developing zinc oxide materials as low-cost alternatives to other materials in the fabrication of transparent electrodes for Liquid Crystal display applications. This research has advanced quickly and preliminary results were presented at the Society of Vacuum Coater's May 2015 Technical Conference (SVC) by the Kent State team, under the leadership of Professor Liang-Chy Chien. Dr. Lin co-authored a poster (view at www.sciengineeredmaterials.com/SVCposter) presentation at this conference.
"We are very pleased with the rapid advance of this research and believe there are substantial commercial opportunities for the materials that are under development," stated Grant McGimpsey, Kent State's Vice President for Research. "I am also excited by our growing partnership with SCI. This is a great example of the public-private partnerships we need to pursue in Ohio to enhance economic development. SCI's manufacturing capabilities and knowledge of the market and Kent State's technical expertise is an ideal combination to pursue new product development and commercialization."
Dan Rooney, President and Chief Executive Officer, said, "We are excited to have Dr. Lin join our research team as we continue to develop innovative materials and material systems for displays. In addition to her research duties, Dr. Lin will also have an active liaison role with our customers and sales team in the commercialization of these products. Our relationship with Kent State University and their globally recognized expertise in Liquid Crystal Display applications leverage our capabilities in one of our target markets. These efforts are consistent with SCI's growth strategy and enable us to accelerate plans related to Liquid Crystal Display applications."
