Four days ago, West Edmonton Mall opened a store with nothing in it. Today, the retail space is full of new and pre-loved clothing, personal and household items which will be packed up and taken to Edmonton's Bissell Centre. Tomorrow, the Mall looks forward to seeing more donations come through the shop's doors.
This is the first year West Edmonton Mall has operated the Holiday Closet, in support of Bissell Centre.
Bissell Centre is an Edmonton-based non-profit organization with a vision to eliminate poverty and homelessness in the community. The organization provides a variety of support services to individuals that range from food and clothing to family support, housing, employment and more.
"We're pleased with the response so far," said West Edmonton Mall Vice President of Marketing Anna Alfonso. "We hoped we would be able to fill the space at least twice and that will happen. The quantity and the quality of the items being dropped off is just amazing."
Items donated to the Holiday Closet are displayed on tables, shelves and rolling racks. Clothing is even styled on mannequins by a fashion stylist. "We thought creating a retail-type environment, where items are displayed would change-up the donating experience," Alfonso said. "It absolutely has. We've had people return to the store to see their donations on display. People are so excited to see mannequins dressed in clothing they've brought in to the Holiday Closet."
West Edmonton Mall's Holiday Closet is located on Europa Boulevard, near Entrance 1, and will be open until December 22, during Mall retail hours (Monday to Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.).
