BRUSSELS (dpa-AFX) - The President of Georgia on Friday has nominated vice premier Giorgi Kvirikashvili to be the Prime minister, after surprise resignation of Irakli Garibashvili on Wednesday.
Kvirikashvili has been additionally serving as foreign minister since early September, 2015.
Georgian President submitted Kvirikashvili's candidacy to parliament for formal approval. The prime minister-designate will then nominate a cabinet to be approved by the legislature.
Kvirikashvili, who was backed by the ruling Georgian Dream coalition, said he was intending 'some change - not a dramatic one' to the cabinet.
Irakli Garibashvili tendered resignation on Wednesday without giving any specific reason for the decision. The opposition politicians pointed it to the falling popularity of Georgian Dream, ahead of key parliamentary elections in 2016.
