TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 06/21/16 -- The agreement to expand the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) "is a step in the right direction to address retirement security and address the crisis faced by many workers approaching retirement," says Paul Meinema, the national president of UFCW Canada.
"We applaud the Prime Minister and those provincial premiers who chose to acknowledge the retirement security issue and enhance the CPP," says Meinema.
"UFCW Canada and our labour allies have campaigned for many years for the CPP to be doubled. While today's announcement falls short of that mark, the proposed plan is a positive indication that our political leaders have heard the voices of everyday workers and their families," says the UFCW Canada leader.
"We urge the provincial premiers to ratify the agreement."
