WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) - A modest plurality of American voters would like to see Democrats retake control of Congress, according to the results of a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.
The poll found that 47 percent of voters would prefer a Democratic-controlled Congress, while 43 percent would prefer Republicans remain in control.
NBC News noted the two parties were tied on the question at 46 percent in June, although Democrats held a similar four-point lead in May.
The poll could be seen as a positive sign for Democratic efforts to retake control of the House and Senate, although gerrymandering helps incumbents stay in office.
Democrats are hopeful that having Donald Trump as the Republican presidential nominee will hurt GOP candidates further down the ticket.
The survey of 800 registered voters was conducted July 31st through August 3rd and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
