Electromagnetic navigation systems
Electromagnetic navigation systems are a tracking system that uses electromagnetic technology. It is gaining popularity among the surgeons as it gets easily aligned inside the small incision. This technology uses electromagnetic field with the help of handheld emitter, which can be easily mobilized around the operating field. It consists of a magnetic coil made compatible with the system along with special tracking software, which displays the 3D location of the surgical site. These systems reduce the surgery time up to 20 minutes as it avoids the need to place optical pins, which otherwise may cause a potential fracture.
Hybrid navigation systems
Combining two or more features of computer-assisted orthopedic surgery (CAOS) tools such as navigation systems and robotics to locate the surgical site to perform less invasive surgery is known as hybrid navigation systems. It results in accurate bone resection and precise positioning of the implant, low outlier frequencies, and ultimately leading to the improved clinical outcome with fewer complications.
This is relatively new technology, which is yet to receive clinical approvals and is at the clinical testing and developmental stage. For instance, PRAXITELES is a bone-mounted robot developed for minimally invasive total knee arthroplasty surgery. Using this technology, the implants are placed by the robot using navigation system.
Optical navigation systems
Optical navigation systems technology provides real-time information to the surgeon with the help of a 3D camera and enables them to understand the exact angle for orientation. This system leads to minimal post-operative complications, less medication requirement, and reduction in re-hospitalization. For instance, optical navigation systems such as intellijoint HIP, developed by a Canada-based startup company Intellijoint Surgical, is the much-appreciated technology used for hip replacement.
"The information attained from this system helps the surgeon to choose a right implant based on individual's anatomical features and perform patient-specific planning process. The software used with the device provides information to the surgeon to have a virtual surgical plan. Such advanced technology in orthopedic surgical navigation system provides user-friendly assistance for surgeons to be able to perform orthopedic surgery using this equipment," says Neha Noopur, a lead analyst at Technavio for orthopedics and medical devices research.
Fluoroscopy-based navigation systems
It is a commonly used technology for surgical navigation in orthopedic surgery. It is the closest to conventional fluoroscopy, where images are shown on the computer screen along with the superimposed location of surgical instruments to create real-time virtual fluoroscopy. The images can also be acquired during the procedure to navigate and validate the surgery.
"This technology enables surgeons to execute a surgical action without performing actual fluoroscopy and is proved to be better than conventional fluoroscopy method as it results in less radiation exposure to the individual and surgical staff, accurate placement of the implant, leading to improved clinical outcomes," says Neha
