BRASILIA (dpa-AFX) - The Venezuelan government rebuffed U.S. President Donald Trump's praise to Latin American nations for supporting the 'restoration of democracy' in Venezuela after a dinner at the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
At the meeting, a new 'campaign of aggression' against Venezuela was planned, said the Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in a statement.
'The Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela denounces to the peoples of the world new threats against the sovereignty, peace and stability of our country, issued at a dinner hosted by the U.S. President Donald Trump to the highest state authorities in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Panama, where they were asked to increase the campaign of aggression against Venezuela,' the document said.
The Venezuelan government's statement criticized specifically the Colombian president's position.
'It is shameful and detestable that President [Juan Manuel] Santos, seeking to prevent a sanction by the U.S. government for the excessive increase in cocaine production, resort to the tactic of projecting Venezuela as a factor of destabilization in the region', stressed the statement.
