LONDON (dpa-AFX) - Personal care products maker Dove has issued an apology for a Facebook advertisement that created an uproar on the social media for being racist.
The ad showed a series of images that appeared to show a black woman turning white after using their soap.
The Facebook advertising campaign used a series of three images to show a black woman removing her brown T-shirt to reveal a white woman in a pink T-shirt underneath. A third image shows the white woman removing her shirt to show a woman of Asian descent.
'An image we recently posted on Facebook missed the mark in representing women of color thoughtfully. We deeply regret the offense it caused,' the Dove tweeted.
Meanwhile, some have defended Dove's ad and claims that that it was misunderstood and taken out of context. They note that the reveal of a white woman under the removed T-shirt was followed by the reveal of an Asian woman in the full advert.
Dove is owned by Dutch-British consumer goods company Unilever.
